First Edition of the Swiss Business Awards in Beijing

The Swiss Business Awards have announced the winners of its first edition during an exclusive gala evening held at the Grand Hyatt Beijing. More than 300 guests attended the event, including top economic and political leaders from both Switzerland and China. The ceremony was part of the official program of the delegation from Switzerland lead by Federal Councillor J. Schneider-Ammann coming to Beijing for the signature of the Free Trade Agreement between Switzerland and China.

“It is important to celebrate success, especially in times of uncertainty. A number of Swiss companies, large and small, have shown particular determination, courage, skill and hence success in their China business ventures. At the same time, Chinese entrepreneurs and businessmen have not been sleeping either and done a great job”, affirmed H.E. Ambassador Jacques de Watteville in his welcome address. "I am proud to see how successful and innovative Swiss enterprises are performing in China. I am proud to see how Chinese companies are successfully investing in Switzerland", affirmed H.E. Federal Councillor Schneider-Ammann in his opening speech.

The Swiss Business Awards is an event organized by the Swiss-Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Beijing to thank companies for their achievements over the past years and to recognize their contribution to both the Swiss and Chinese business communities. This is the first year that the Swiss Business Awards are organized in China. In five different categories, the Awards honoured companies and individuals who have achieved distinct results and demonstrated the highest level of commitment to the Sino-Swiss community and the promotion of Switzerland in China.

SwissCham Beijing has invited all fully or partially Swiss-owned companies doing business in China as well as all Chinese companies or organizations with a strong link to Switzerland to participate in the Swiss Business Awards. The applications of the award candidates have been reviewed by an independent jury consisting of representatives of the SwissCham Board of Directors, the Swiss Embassy in Beijing, and the private sector.

The awards were handed over by Dr. Rudolf Wehrli, President of Economiesuisse (for the Nestlé Innovator of the Year Award), Mr. Jianjun Xie, President and Founder of Dongdao (for the CSR Company of the Year Award), H.E. Federal Councillor Schneider-Ammann (for the Startup of the Year Award), H.E. Ambassador Jacques de Watteville (for the Outstanding Achievements Award) and Mrs Ruth Metzler, President of Switzerland Global Enterprise and former Federal Councillor of Switzerland (for the Chinese Investor in Switzerland Award).

The winners of the Swiss Business Awards this year are:

Nestlé INNOVATOR OF THE YEAR - 雀巢年度创新奖:
ABB (CHINA) LTD. ABB(中国)有限公司

The Jury has been impressed by the way ABB has successfully shifted from made-in-China to designed-in-China in recent years. The company’s products developed in China are not only recognized in the local market but also exported to overseas markets. ABB is in many ways a great showcase of innovation cooperation between Switzerland and China.

China Haidian CSR COMPANY OF THE YEAR - 中國海澱年度企业社会责任奖:
HOLCIM LTD. 瑞士豪瑞集团

The jury acknowledges that Holcim has successfully introduced its best practices with regard to Corporate Social Responsibility to China. Since the 1990s, Holcim has been helping its Chinese partner Huaxin to improve cement production technology, energy efficiency and reduce carbon emission. Holcim has also made a significant positive contribution to the sustainability of China’s industry as a whole.

The Jury was impressed by the fact that Swisstouches Hotels and Resorts not only has successfully launched a new hotel brand in a foreign country, but was also able to beat all financial targets in their first year of operation. With very promising growth potential and a clear focus on the “Swissness” of their brand, Swisstouches can become an important ambassador for the quality of Swiss hospitality in China.

NESTLÉ (CHINA) LTD. 雀巢(中国)有限公司

The Jury emphasized the exceptional success that Nestlé has had in China in the past few years. Nestlé has established some very successful Joint Venture partnerships with Chinese companies. This has allowed Nestlé to be even closer to local tastes and positioned the company for long-term sustainable growth in this important market.

Sinopec Addax Petroleum is by far the largest Chinese investor in Switzerland and also the largest Chinese company by turnover. The Jury commends the company’s successful integration strategy as well as its efforts to create jobs in Switzerland and stimulate the local economy.
